As a company continues to grow and expand, they may choose to implement an
international business strategy that incorporates foreign markets, which in return brings in new
customers. If the decision is made to either market or manufacture in another country, the
company may be forced to send one of their domestic employees to the host country to oversee
operations and report back results. This person is called an expatriate (Wild, 2019, page 388).
When these developing companies are making choices about the future of the business, they
must also consider how these choices impact their employees.
The process of sending an employee abroad is called polycentric staffing (Wild, 2019,
page 388). When a company decides to send an expatriate to another country, it is often long
term. As a result of this, there are often many challenges that the company may ultimately face,
but also many challenges for the individual selected for the job. The polycentric approach can be
