From chapter 26, three pieces of art that are examples of cultural expression from the
Americas are “Two Grey Hills,” feathered bowl, and Red Mean: Self Portrait.
The piece “Two Grey Hills” is a Navajo tapestry from 2003 using a style from the 1900s
in New Mexico. On the one hand, this tapestry is just a weaving, but for the artist and her culture
it has strong ties to religion and the universe. For example, this kind of pattern will remind
Navajo of the story of “Spider Woman” who taught it to a Navajo goddess (835). Because of this,
any viewers of the Navajo culture looking at the tapestry will be a reinforcement of their cultural
values. More than that, it will remind these people that they have survived despite European
