After reading “The Reunification of Japan Under Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa Clan,” the
brief history of the Japanese social, religious, and trade structure made it apparent that the
movement of Christianity played an important role in Japanese history. Hideyoshi and the
Tokugawa clan began to emplace laws such as Edict on the Collection of Swords (1588), Edict
on Change of Status (1591), Laws Governing Military Households (1615), and The Closed
Country Edict (1635), in order to mitigate the growth of Christian influence within Japan.
