Event Extra Credit
The event I went to was CGCC’s Sustainability Day held on April 13th. The campus was
filled with different tents and posters with all different kinds of projects and information. There
were three different elementary schools that attended, for the younger students to be able to tour
campus and learn about Sustainability and issues that require our attention. It was exciting
walking around and seeing all the innovative ways to obtain clean water, cleaning the planet and
generating electricity in alternative ways. What I found the most interesting was this one
student’s tent about mycelium mushrooms. He had a book titled, “How Mycelium Mushrooms
Can Save the World” and went on to tell me all these interesting facts about mushrooms I had
never known before. They break down plant and animal debris to create rich, new soil
underneath the forest floor where they exist. He went on telling me about how we can use them
to decompose toxic waste and purify water, which is a necessity in certain areas that don’t have
clean, accessible water. Mostly everything I learned during the event struck me, since I had no
idea how awful ocean pollution, space pollution, coal power in Arizona were, amongst other
things. The most important points I learned were learning how to filtrate water through a plastic
happening currently. I’m really happy I attended this event and look forward to going to more.
