INTRODUCTION
Goat production is one of the most important industry in the Philippines. Carpa
aegagrus hircus commonly known as goat is considered as one of the developing
industries in the country as well as in South-east Asia. Goat provides a vital provision of
protein diets of the people as well as an excellent source of livelihood in particular for
the smallholders within the rural areas. Goat does not only providing meat, milk and
manure for the crops, but also generating family cash income, especially when rice
production fails (Xaypha, 2004).
The Philippine goat industry is predominated by backyard goat raisers. Based on
the Philippine Statistics Authority, the total inventory of goat as of July 1, 2015, was
3.77 million heads share of backyard farms was 98.68 % or 3.73 million heads while the
remaining 1.32 % or 0.05 million heads of goat were raised in commercial farms. Goat
are very popular among small holder farmers because they only require low capital
investment, fit for the backyard farming conditions and multiply.
Backyard goat raising as defined by the Philippine Statistics Authority (2016)
refers to any farm or household whether farming or non-framing raising at least one (1)
head of animal and does not qualify as commercial farm. On the other hand, commercial
farm refers to any goat farm which satisfy the following conditions; a) Tending at least
21 heads of adult and zero head of young; b) Tending at least 41 heads of young animals;
and c) Tending at least 10 heads of adult and 22 heads of young.
The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research
and Development claims that the total inventories of goats are gradually increasing at 2
percentages per year however its supply continues to be not enough to satisfy the current
needs. The low supply of meat of the goat amid its excessive demand reveals production
of goat has potential among smallholder farmers which will bring an opportunity to the
goat producers and thereby increase their income.
In T’boli, it can be observed that number of goat growers in the area is
flourishing. Hence, the researcher would would like to evaluate the current situation of
backyard goat production.
The results of this study will serve as a basis in formulating recommendation for
the development of backyard goat production in the study area.
The specific objectives of this study are stated below;
1. To determine the socio-demographic profile of the backyard goat producers in the
area.
2. To determine the farm management practices in backyard goat production.
3. To determine the marketing practices and profitability in backyard goat
production.
4. To determine the problems encountered in backyard goat production.
5. To determine the volume of backyard goat production.
6. To determine the government support and programs to backyard goat production.
7. To give policy implications and recommendations.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The Importance of Goat
The domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is a subspecies of goat domesticated
from the wild goat of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is an individual from
the family Bovidae and is intently identified with the sheep as both are within the goat-
antelope subfamily Caprinae. Goats are capable of adapting to diverse agro-
climatic conditions starting from arid dry to cold arid to warm moist. They can be raised
in fields, hilly tracts, and sandy zones and at excessive altitudes.
The goat is a multi-purpose animal producing meat, milk, hide, fiber and manure.
Its meat is known to be lower in saturated fat than chicken, pork and beef, low in
cholesterol, however higher in protein. Its milk is better than cow milk for example the
fats and proteins are available in a better state and are all the more effectively digestible,
specifically by children and invalids. In addition, is utilized as an ayurvedic medication
for those who has bronchial asthma, cough, diabetes and has higher buffering
characteristics and this improves its value for patients influenced by peptic ulcers, liver
problem, jaundice, biliary disorders and other digestive problems. Its hide is utilized for
the manufacture of leather products including goatskin gloves and carpets. Its manure is
a rich fertilizer for the fields. An average goat produces over a ton of fertilizer
consistently, and the feces are in pellet shape, which makes them simple to manage. Goat
fertilizer is a great source of potassium, potash and nitrogen, and possibly other minerals
as well (Farm Cradle 2016).
Goat has been labeled as poor man’s cow that is because of its huge contribution
to the poor man’s economic system. They not just supply nutritious and effectively
digestible milk to their children but additionally regular source of additional income for
the poor and landless of marginal farmers. Being little measured creatures, goats can
without much of a stretch be overseen by ladies and youngsters. It doesn’t need a lot
taking care of and extreme work in draining and care of goats. Goat raising don’t need a
huge capital investment and feeding expenses are also quite low. Comparing to the
maintenance of cow, four goats can be maintained as cheaply as one indigenous cow.
Goats can be effectively reared in areas wherein fodder or forage resources are confined.
Returns on capital of up to 50% and recovery of 70% of retail price are feasible in goat
farming. Goat farming performs a vital role in imparting gainful employment in rural
areas (Farm Cradle, 2016).
Goats require low maintenance because of the way that they consume tree leaves,
grasses, weeds and agricultural by-products. Goats require substantially less feed than
cows and carabao as around 10 native goats may be fed on the feed stuffs sufficient
for one cattle and roughly seven purebred dairy goats might be consumed the feed
stuffs for one dairy cow (Calleja, 2010).
Raising goats either for backyard farming or for commercial scale is more
affordable and simpler to manage than other livestock animals. With the aid of nature,
goats are browsers and like to consume numerous sorts of plants. Goat rising is ideal
within the uplands wherein leguminous forage and grain crops consisting of grasses
abound. Goats are famous with small holders because of their efficient conversion of
feed into consumable and high-quality meat, milk and hide. They are not only a source of
protein, but in addition they provide the much needed income. In fact, goats provide
livelihood to approximately 15 million of Filipinos (Faylon, 2009). They are also utilized
as holistic equipment for land vegetation control considering that they can manage
grasses through browsing for that reason minimizing the work for clearing the field.
With proper grazing management, goats can eliminate noxious weeds and restore native
grasses (Cosadio et al., 2011).
A study was conducted by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and
Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) tells us that despite the fact
that a goat is small, it could produce as a lot as four liters of milk a day if it is purebred
and is given a ration to fulfill all of its dietary necessities. They have also found out that
