European Explorer Transformation
Álvar Núñez, Paul Le Jeune, and Matteo Ricci were all explorers that spent an extended
period living with unfamiliar civilizations (Americans and Chinese). During their experiences,
each explorer learned a great deal about the foreign people and their ways of life. However, only
one of the three men was transformed by his experiences. Le Jeune and Ricci’s ideas about their
civilizations were transformed and changes while Núñez was not changed to the same extent.
While living with Indian tribes in America, Álvar Núñez gained vast new knowledge of
the customs and traditions of the American people. However, there is no indication that Núñez
was transformed by his time living with Americans. Núñez assumed that American Indians were
uncivilized and savage people and this view only changed slightly over his nine-year journey.
