EUROPEAN ARRIVAL
Europeans arrived in the” New World” in 1492, settling and making colonies. Then started
talking to people who they never thought theyd see there. They allied with some of them and started
trade with them, then started making tribes turn on each other for their new friends. Now I’m going to
talk about this, but in Louisiana. In Louisiana there were many tribes, the Choctaws, the Houma, the
Tunica, the Caddo, the Natchez, the Chi*macha, and the Bayougoula. These tribes were very big and
spread out. Some of the tribes still remain but some not in Louisiana.
These tribes had many feelings about these Europeans some bad and some good, we’ll see. The
Houma had a shaky rela*onship with the Europeans, mostly the French. The Houma where good friends
with the French. The Tunica tribe attacked them probably because of jealousy. So they moved closer to
New Orleans to trade and etc… with the Europeans. Then the Houma lost their French allies but they
didn’t know that. The Houma weren’t troubled by the European disease but then forced of their land in
the 20thcentury.
The Tunica had a good relationship with the Europeans. They fought many battles against many
other tribes for them. The Tunica also attacked many other tribes to get closer to other Europeans. The
Europeans traded many things with the Tunica. They relied on the tunica for salts, rice, and cattle – as
well as military support. The Tunica also killed the Natchez and didn’t know what made them do with
they did.
The Natchez hated the Europeans attacking them and now targeted. They were attacked by
Choctaws and all. The Natchez mostly died of disease. They traded with the Europeans but didn’t enjoy
it. They didn’t smoke the Calumet and they thought of it as an act of war. The Natchez slaughtered them
