The site of our ethnographic research was Pyramid’s Hookah Lounge. The project
was focused on the lounge itself along with broader topics such as different cultures at
Pyramid’s, history of hookah and cultural interactions. Throughout our research, which involved
interviews, field notes, and participant observation, we learned important things about the
history of hookah, cultural differences, and separation of groups in a diverse location. Pyramid’s
Hookah Lounge is a place for college students of many different backgrounds in Athens to hang
out.
Pyramid’s was established in August of 2007 on the corner of Mill Street and Court
Street. Pyramid’s was opened with visions of a fun, lively and chill hangout spot for the college
students in Athens. The lounge gradually got more popular on its way to one of the liveliest
spots uptown in Athens today. The majority of visitors received by Pyramid’s are usually college
students under the drinking age (age 17-20). Pyramid’s can be thought of as an alternative to a
pub or bar for young college students. But why do college students enjoy going to Pyramid’s?
Pyramid’s is not only a place to purchase and practice hookah, but also a place for a
diverse selection of cultures found in Athens to hang out and find a “comfort zone”. This
