Ethics Paper
After completing the Personal Ethical Threshold exercises, I have discovered that one of
the top personal values involved being able to truthfully speak to a colleague about their
racist behavior. I personally place a higher value on race because I think that it is definitely
an important issue in today’s society. When an individual is in a professional setting, they
should be open-minded as much as possible. Being racist and closed minded against
someone who is a member of a different race or ethnic background is unacceptable.
My overall score from the Personal Ethical Threshold questionnaire is a 3.40. Since higher
scores, 4 being the highest, represent a higher PET, my score is somewhat high. The
situational pressures presented by the 10 different scenarios challenged my moral
standards but I answered them as truthfully as possible. As the article stated, we are likely
to abandon moral principles if the moral intensity of the situation is relatively low
(Comer). It wasn’t easy for me to choose options that required me to lower my morals but
I tried to answer them to the best of my ability. This score, to me, is quite acceptable.
The ethical framework that would be connected to my personal value to is Rawls’ fairness
framework. The equal opportunity concept of the fairness framework is definitely relevant
to racial issues within the workplace. It’s connected because of Chris’ remark. Racial
comments in a professional setting such as the one in the scenario should, by any means,
