The behavior of buying fans and followers in social media has been relatively unnoticed
for many years. In recent years, brands like Mercedes-Benz and Pepsi have been accused of
paying for followers (Taylor et al., 2011). There are also several public figures such as Sean
Combs and Newt Gingrich who have been accused of doing the same. These are only a few
instances, but they demonstrate how buying fans and followers have become so common in
social media (Christians et al., 2015). Bots, on the other hand, have been used since the inception
of computer systems. Bots are considered in many cases to useful, especially when they are used
to automatically aggregate content from different sources, such as news feeds. However, the use
of bots raises some ethical issues. Many bots today are categorized as malicious entities made
