Ethics Case Study
John and Peter work fulltime forty hours per week. They have don’t have free time they
are always busy. Their professor asked them to propose a term project, which is 30% of final
grade. They also should present their project in class. Peter suggested to copy and to summarize
a 50-pages report which he can bring from his work (Chrysler US). Peter just has access to the
report, and he does not know who compiled the report and how they did. Peter tries to convince
John that we should take this report. Peter says: “We are very busy; both of us work full time;
John, let’s get this report, and hand it in”. Why Peter’s action is unethical?
According to C. Schaefer, 2003 “Engineers have an ethical and social responsibility to
themselves, their clients, and to society”
Stealing someone work and getting the credit for it is unethical. It does not reword the hard work
and the effort that got into it and it does not make the stealer learn from what it was assigned for
them, even if no one was to know about the crime. Peter thought that if he cheats his way the life
would be easier, and the truth is the opposite it would make it more difficult for a different
project. It is more rewording feeling if Peter makes his own work and presents it with confidence
and pleasure. There are basic rules and ethics that if every one used them and make them their
inspiration the world will be a better place. Engineering ethics are the study of moral issues and
decisions confronting individuals and organizations involved in engineering.
