Ethics Begins with All of Us
Have you ever wondered what is ethics? The term ethics, derived from the Greek word
ethos which means customs or habit, can be defined as standards of moral behavior, that is,
behavior accepted by society as right versus wrong. Ethics is important because it satisfies the
basic human need of being fair and honest and it builds the organizations or persons reputation in
a positive light for society. It is a personal decision to make in a situation whether you will be
ethical or unethical. (Juneja, 2015).
In scenario one which was presented in the video Ethics Begins with Jack’s friend who
took the salt and pepper shakers from the bar they frequented, was unethical. This is so because
they stole the bar’s items for his own apartment. That simple action may lead to a bigger issue
such as Jack and his friends being banned from the bar although they did nothing wrong but
because they are acquaintances of a thief.
In the second scenario Raj Kumar who sleeps most of the day, takes his lunch hour and
still signs in for a full working day puts his company at risk. He does so by means of his lack of
productivity during his working day. This unethical practice could lead him to not being able to
reach his full potential in the work place so as to be an eligible employee for promotion, it could
also cause him to lose his job and tarnish his reputation, in both the organization and the working
world.
