Ethics and Project Management

Having good ethics is extremely important when it comes to project managers. Project
managers interaction with all sorts people such as project team members, stakeholders, upper
management, vendors and many more. This interact needs to be well balanced and proper be-
cause each group may be focusing on their demands and needs while not taking into considera-
tion the others. This can cause a conflict of interest and a potential fall out. Each party has to
work together and compromise at times in order to move forward. There are also other factors to
take into consideration when it comes to ethics. We have to be fair to everyone and demonstrate
respect. As per the project management Institute, fairness is vital. Access to information needs to
be equal to everyone that is authorized to have that information.
With todays fast pace in delivering results and meeting deadlines, we have to remember
to remain ethical and not take shortcuts that may be considered immoral in order to complete a
task. For example, not reviewing documents and just mass approving changes without taking
into consideration that some of the request may be unreasonable or conflicting with the require-
ments of the stakeholders. This reminds me of a time when a team leader made some changes on
the procedures of issuing system credit overrides without discussing it with the higher ups. This
caused several credits to have to be reversed when it was discovered and we had to call the mem-
