What is ethics?
Ethics which is known as moral philosophy is the philosophical study of
morality. They affect how people make decisions, lead their lives, and are
concerned with what is good for individuals and society. The term comes from the
Greek word meaning "custom, habit, character, and behavior".
In my point of view, ethics is two things. Firstly, Ethics refers to well-
founded standards of right and wrong that dictate what people should do, such as
rights, obligations, societal benefits, justice, and specific virtues. For example,
ethics relates to standards that impose appropriate obligations to avoid rape, theft,
murder, slander, and fraud. Ethical standards include those that prescribe the
virtues of honesty, kindness, loyalty, and the right to life, the right to freedom, and
the right to privacy. Secondly, ethics refers to the research and development of
people's ethical standards. For instance, people's feelings, laws, and social norms
could deviate from what is ethical. Thus, it is important to constantly examine
one's standards to make sure they are acceptable and well-founded. Then, ethics
means the continuous effort of studying people's beliefs and moral conduct,
striving to ensure that people, and the institutions shaped, live up to standards that
