I think the point the video is trying to make is that it is offensive to make assumptions
about a person by their physical appearance. It is also offensive to some people to continue to ask
questions like he did to get more information about her ethnicity. In the video, the guy
automatically assumed that the woman was not from America and continued probing her for
answers until she told him what he wanted to hear. If he was trying to make small talk, he should
have just stopped after she answered his first question about where she was from. It was obvious
by her reaction that he was really getting on her nerves. I believe he realized just how irritating
the situation was when she reversed the roles and asked him the same questions.
If this would have happened in the workplace rather than in public, the man would have
likely ended up in the human resources office. Asking racially or ethnically charged questions in
the workplace can result in discipline or termination if another person finds it offensive. I believe
