As an adult, you are faced with decisions daily. Sometimes these decisions are
simple, such as what to eat for dinner, but sometimes they can be extremely complex
and an individual’s ethics must be considered in order to make the best decision.
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH
The Trevino and Nelson text references three different philosophical approaches to
decision making: consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. The
philosophical approach that suits my ethical framework and will guide my decision-
making would be the consequentialist approach. When there is a decision that
needs made, the first thing that is considered is what effect will my choice have on
myself and others involved? In general, this is a results based approach focused on
outcomes rather than an approach to the specific type of decision that is being made.
The consequentialist approach requires you to weigh the harms and benefits of each
possible outcome of a decision, looking at how many people would either benefit or
be harmed by the decision result is the biggest influencer in this approach.
