Ethical Issues in Supervision
When I was in nursing school, I had to be supervised and checked off on certain
procedures before I could attempt to do the procedure alone. Most of the time either our teacher
had to be there, or the charge nurse would supervise, and we usually had to accomplish the
procedure three or more times, making no mistakes. We were then “checked off” to do these
procedures by ourselves without supervision. There were certain areas of nursing that I had
trouble getting approved to do by myself and it was frustrating. I hated, and I mean hated, having
to clean out tracheotomy sites because spit makes me nauseous and it was all I could do not to
throw up when doing the procedure. I really tried to hide when there was a trach to clean out and
after working in surgical intensive care, I was made to clean enough to finally get approved to be
able to suction out a tracheotomy. I then realized that I would not work in any field of nursing
