As technology continues to shape the everyday lives of our society, new ways of
expressing one’s own identity through online resources is becoming a more prevalent issue and
some sort of restrictions need to be implemented to ensure that, “misuses – or at least ethically
ambiguous uses – of digital media” (James et al., 2009, p. 2) are eliminated and monitored more
carefully. New forms of social media continue to develop allowing online users to create false
identities while interacting within various communities. These forms of media include but are
not limited to: Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, all of which allow participants to
create personalized profiles. Developing online identities can be a positive learning experience
for adolescents because these individuals are able to explore their creative side, expressing
themselves within a supportive community environment while receiving feedback from others.
