Essay Two
The first Persian war which took place between 490 BCE and the second being 480-479 BCE has
also made an impact on Western History. (Dutton, Marchand and Harkness) The war which was
originally to be between Athen and Persia extended out to a Greek Army against Persia. The city
of Athen encountered a few problems, one being that the citizens felt as though the oracle
readers interpreted the readings incorrectly, and that there was also confusion about what a
“wooden wall” really was intended to mean in the oracle. However, there was a man named
Themistocles, who was the son of Neocles, who came forward and confirmed that the oracle
reading was indeed inaccurate and that it was intended for “Barbarians” and not Athenians.
