Pre-Socratic Era Philosopher: THALES
History:
Thales was the first Greek philosopher (624~546 BC) from Miletus, which was the coastal city
on the western side of Anotolia (Anatalya), the present day Turkey.
Details about his personal life:
The historian Laecritius reported that Thales parents were Examyas and Cleobulina of the noble
Milesian family of Thelidae. While some souces suggests that his parents were Phoenician.
Details of his life are sketchy and often contradictory. Some reports says that he was married
and had a son ‘Cybisthus’ or possibly adopted nephew of the same name, while other reports
suggest that he never married.
He is said to have died of dehydration at the age of 78.
Historical existence of Thales:
• Thales was the first subscriber to materialist and naturalism in trying to define the
substance or substances of which all material objects were composed.
• Thales is known as “THE MAN OF THE FIRST”. In the western traditions, Thales was the
