Case Questions: The CIO of Equinix in conjunction with the Mayor of Miami asked you as a consultant to
prepare a presentation on what the company and the city could do to leverage the synergies to increased
affect for both parties. Write a one-page solution that will be used as the basis for a presentation to both
these leaders.
Equinix is the world’s major IBX data center and provider, making it a major player in the
Metropolitan Miami Area. Miami has the ability to serve as a professional hub for its prime location,
economy, and the sixth internet capacity in the world. Miami has been improving its technology for the
past years but Equinix can help speed growth, operational efficiency, and improve the quality of their
residents. Parking in Miami can be frustrating, time-consuming and expensive. Americans spend 17
hours per year driving around city blocks or lots looking for a spot at an annual cost of $345. Overpaying
an approximate of $97 per year adding more than $20 billion in total. Miami counts with 34,000 parking
spaces with an annual revenue of approximately $29 million including $6.6 million in parking tickets.
Using the Equinix network and technology we can partner and provide smart parking to our residents and
tourists. With Coconut Grove being the only city with smart parking, Equinix can be the leader in smart
transportation for South Florida.
By creating a parking network Miami and Equinix would benefit by:
Providing a mobile app for residents. Provide real time parking updates helping guide users to the
closest available spot. Maximize revenue by detecting overstays and directing more drivers to
underused spaces.
Create new city jobs installing and maintaining parking sensors. Each sensor covers up to 30
parking spaces, and they can be mounted on lamp posts, buildings or masts without requiring
roadworks.
Automated valet services for crowded areas such as airports, beaches, malls and shipping ports.
Automated valet parking systems allow drivers to leave their vehicles in a special spot, where a
valet takes over and parks the vehicle tight, in an efficient way. Special garages with valet robots
are equipped with artificial intelligence which allows it to optimize parking lot space.
Pay by sky service where residents are charged for the exact amount of time the car is parked.
Use accurate satellite vehicle positioning algorithms and a built-in database of parking locations,
time, prices, and rules including exceptions.
Collect parking data to identify areas with high traffic and parking issues to develop future
projects such as garages. 3D city grids used to determine new development areas based on city
