Equifax: Data Breach of 2017
Equifax is a credit reporting company that offers several extensive reports regarding a
customer’s overall credit. This company has obtained highly personal information for millions of
consumers since its’ founding in 1899. On July 29th of 2017, it was discovered that there had been a
major hack within the system. This hack actually occurred sometime between May and July. The
company has stated that criminal hackers “exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain
access to certain files.” I will be researching how exactly this breach has affected consumers and their
trust in the company. I will also be developing a plan to help that company move forward and ensure
that this situation is not repeated.
The Equifax breach of 2017 involved the compromising of over 143 million customers in the
United States alone. The United Kingdom and Canada were also impacted by this event. The breach
affected consumers’ personal information such as social security information, credit cards, drivers’
