Covid 19 pandemic has both positive and negative impact to Vietnam environment.
There are some positive affects during the covid 19.
The first affect is that the improvement of Vietnam air quality. Air quality has improved in major cities
due to social distancing measures. In Saigon, for instance, the daily PM2.5 levels from March 20 to April
10 was consistently below 20 μg/m3 on average, a stark reduction from January or February, when they
were 40-60 μg/m3 on average. PM2.5, also described as super fine particles, is a fraction of the width of
a human hair, which is released from vehicles, industry and natural sources like dust. In Hanoi the PM2.5
levels in the first quarter were lower on average than in previous months. the levels of carbon monoxide
(CO) have also seen improvements. For example, average CO levels in Hanoi from April 1 to 10 fell
remarkably from the first quarter. Daily CO levels were on average 500-1,300 μg/m3, whereas in
January-March it rose to 2,000 μg/m3 at certain times.
Next is reducing the water pollution. COVID-19 has forced lockdowns in Vietnam. As such, many offices,
factories and industrial areas have been forced to close. The closure of these areas have allowed water
bodies to recover and water pollution levels to drop. These reductions are further aided by restrictions
on travel and tourism, which means that fewer people are out on cruise ships, ferries and even polluting
beaches.
Beside that. Covid 19 has also clean the tourist areas. The lack of tourists, as a result of the social
distancing measures due to the new coronavirus pandemic, has caused a notable change in the
appearance of many tourist areas. Wastes in tourist sites has also decreased and became cleaner. For
example, Nha Trang beaches now look cleaner and with crystal clear water.
In addition, decreased the environment noise level is one of the positive influences. Environmental noise
is defined as an unwanted sound that could be generated by anthropogenic activities, the transit of
engine vehicles, and melodies at high volume. The imposition of quarantine measures by the state has
caused people to stay at home. With this, the use of private and public transportation has decreased
significantly. Also, commercial activities have stopped almost entirely. All these changes have caused the
of people were provided masks and protective clothing as well as processed food, which contributed to
a large amount of waste being discharged into the environment.
