Environmental Awareness, a student’s point of view
“The Earth is what we all have in common.” – Wendell Berry. This world was given to us as God’s gift of
life and survival and in return, it is our sole duty and responsibility to take care of it. There have been
countless changes in the natural world and many of these changes are negative outcomes of our human
activities that have soiled and polluted the environment around us. These changes will continue to grow
and linger in our environment on account of the fact that these negative human activities are still being
pursued and practiced each day. I believe that we would not wish to see the day when the aftermath of
all our unpleasant acts will manifest in our world. One step in getting closer to achieving the natural
world’s betterment is through the knowledge of what we call Environmental Awareness.
As a student, I believe that it is quite essential for me to learn more about Environmental
Awareness and everything that comes with it, since I aim to be a citizen who is not only responsible for
her actions, but also one who knows what is really happening to our natural world and what certain
steps should necessarily be taken. I understand it all to be a give-and-take process wherein we humans
need our environment for innumerable reasons and at the same time, our environment also needs our
cooperation to take good care of it. We must be fully aware of the environment’s needs as well as
various complications that it continues to face so that a proper response to these problems will be made
and action will be taken upon. Although, we have to keep in mind that being in a new generation makes
it much harder to convince elders who own such companies that contribute to the immense pollution
our environment faces. When speaking with older family members of my own, I realized that this is not
much of a problem they consider to be fatal. I understood this to be because they have practiced such a
way of living almost their whole lives which we now consider to be the very opposite of being “eco–
friendly”. The generations before us were the very ones responsible for the state our natural world is
now in and as the next generation, it is not our responsibility to continue the same impractical actions
that would worsen our environment’s state, but it is our responsibility to be able to change that.
This generation is the future. We would become the future leaders and workers of this world so
as much as possible, we should make ourselves knowledgeable and full of potential. I realized that being
one with nature will help us see things differently and we will be humble citizens who take action on real
