Summary of Academic Articles:
The first article that I chose was about utopia and gender. The author of the article talks
about how Omelas is a utopia and that the city comes together to march in a parade but
there are two different sides; the ones who are part of the utopia and happy, and the ones
who walk alone.
The author makes the connection between the story of the Garden of Eden and the ending
of the Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. The short story ends with someone walking
away looking for a better utopia. Eve did the same thing in the Garden of Eden. The
difference was that the Garden was never a utopia for Eve like Omelas was for the ones
who left.
The second article that I found was an overview about the story. But it broke down
specifically the child and the citizens. The author talks about how mistreated the child is.
The child is malnourished and is trapped in the basement without any windows. They
identify the child as a scapegoat. The child is sacrificed for the good of the community.
The citizens are very happy with life and everything seems to be going well. The author
writes about how the citizens are not simple or nave. They know about the child in but
they believe that the child needs to suffer for the entire town to be happy.
