1. This passage from “For the Union Dead” is displaying the fact that Colonel Shaw is not
taking the same risk as the black infantrymen. Colonel Shaw is riding on his horse and he is safe
in his bubble that he never has to leave. The imagery of the poem showcases the difference
between the circumstances of black infantrymen and white officials. The infantrymen are stuck
under the command of Colonel Shaw and have no choice but to fight while Shaw waits in his
