News media has flourished and grown from ordinary newspapers to broadcasting media
with live coverage of the issues at hand. We find ourselves sitting at the dinner table at six in the
afternoon and turn on the television to find our local news showing highlights of our favorite
sports teams. When we turn on Google Chrome and go to Yahoo.com, we find news headlines
plastered on the page. News has grown to many heights, but have diminished in their core
values. In the book Losing the News, by Alex S. Jones, he argues the assertion that what used to
be traditional news (iron core) became untraditional. Iron core news is news that has only one
objective, to tell the audience strictly what is happening with no bias or intention of
entertainment. News media has become blinded with the factor of entertainment and revenue
that the idea of iron core news became obsolete. Therefore, I will be comparing the iron core
news standards of NY Times, National Public Radio, Huffington Post, the Guardian, and CNN.
The NY Times is one of the leading newspapers of New York and in the United States
inclusive. The NY Times does give the news in a traditional standpoint; where the news was
written in order to inform and not entertain, but the iron core news standard is not present. In an
article named “Gov. Cuomo Makes Sense on Fracking”, the NY Times specifically states that the
banning of hydraulic fracturing by Gov. Cuomo was a right decision. “This was not an easy
decision, but it was the right one” (The Editorial Board). The title of the article clearly states
their positioning to the banning of fracking. The title is formatted for demeanor to those who
believe that fracking is beneficial to our growth of U.S, Republicans. The article states no

opinion of the other side and specifically only states the assertions that positively supports the
Democratic objectives. The length of the coverage is broad and if you search up Gov. Cuomo
fracking, you will get around seven articles covering the story of his banning and making sense
of fracking to other departments, but no parts on why it is positive or beneficial. In conclusion,
the NY Times traditionally broadcasts news, but with less iron core news and more politically
objective bias.
National Public Radio (NPR) is a leading news radio station that broadcasts global news
every day. In the article “Voters In Texas City Approve Ban on Fracking”, the article does not
give factual information about the hydraulic fracturing effects in Texas or reasons to the approval
of banning. “This issue will continue to be hotly contested. I am confident that reason and
science will triumph, and the ban will be overturned…” (Calamur). It talks about the responses
