Book 5 Lines 144-151
“ Next he killed Astynoös and Hypeiron, shepherd of the people, striking one with
the bronze-heeled spear above the nipple, and cutting the other beside the
shoulder through the collar-bone with the great sword, so that neck and back
were hewn free of the shoulder. He left these men, and went on after Polyidos
and Abas, sons of the age dream-interpreter, Eurydamas: yet for these two as
they went forth the old man did not answer their dreams, but Diomendes the
powerful slew them. “
The concept of dramatic effect of the force that possessed Diomendes to go back
into the war even though he was wounded showed how brave he was, but since
he was given superhuman strength and the ability to see who were gods and
who were warriors, the force to get revenge over took his body. Diomendes in
this passage is describe so well in how his ability to fight and kill, from the great
detail in how Diomedes wounded and killed Astynoös and Hypeiron. The
description of how he killed them, the exact spot it happened on, I just found very
interesting. The weapons they used back in the days don’t look like there able to
do what is describes, trying to compare to now how anyone can own a gun and
shot someone to death.
