Lynn Stuart Parramore in her article “Fitbits for Bosses” uses specific language to
influence readers to be suspicious of biometric monitoring. Parramore develops her thesis of
having an invasion of privacy by the monitoring technology and relating the modern days with
the term “dystopian”, which is a negative term that refers to an imaginary place where the state
of being is very bad or oppressive. Her communication is effective when she proposes the
audience a hypothetical situation where they will see themselves using a “behavior-monitoring
device”. The audience will be engaged with her thesis when they have been asked to be part of
this hypothetical situation. Parramore is strongly affirming that technology has gone
mainstream, and how technology devices have been creeping into workplaces. Using the words
