Writing Assignment
An epiphany is like a moment of clarity. It is a moment when you realize something
powerful and it is almost as if you have solved a puzzle that you have been working so hard to
finish. In both of these stories, the characters have epiphanies and realize things that change
their outlook on life, but I am more interested in “Boys and Girls”. In this story, this young girl is
trying to find her place in life because in this time, women and men are not equal. She is
exposed to a life where women are domesticated and men are superior, but she finds herself
wanting to be more than what women have been up until this point. I feel like a lot of young
women can relate to her because we as women are told that we should aspire to be wives and
mothers, and that that should be the most important goal for a woman but I feel differently.
I personally struggled for a long time trying to figure out what is was that I wanted in life. I was
always told what to do and where to go, but as I became older, I was expected to make my own
decisions. The problem was that I didn’t know how because I was never given the chance to. I
had no idea what I wanted because I didn’t even know who I was. I was told that I should be
successful, but not how to achieve it. In the last year, I have learned a lot about myself.
Although I don’t think there was a single moment when everything became clear, I do believe
that I have had many self-reflections and many conversations with myself that have allowed me
to be the independent woman that I am today. Maybe I have had more than one epiphany. I’ve
learned many life lessons and I feel like every time I make a better decision for myself, that is
the result of my epiphanies. Like the girl in the story, I have had moments where I felt less
