Engineering fields have diverse applications throughout our society, but it is always
interesting to learn how these degrees can be used. During an Engineering in Action seminar
featuring Doctor Christina Salas, she explained her multiple research projects in orthopedic
biomechanics. Additionally, she highlighted her role in mask production and distribution, on a
national level, during an international pandemic.
Doctor Christina Salas is an associate professor in the UNM Department of Orthopedics
and the School of Engineering. Though the seminar was to focus on Dr. Salas’ involvement in
the solution to the personal protective equipment (PPE) shortage here in New Mexico, she was
able to incorporate a brief explanation of her typical responsibilities in her laboratory. Consisting
of pediatric research, resident training, collaborative research, and orthopedic tissue engineering,
Salas can accomplish many tasks in relationship to her team.
