Lab 4 Homework Assignment
The unconditioned stimulus in the color square/ tone experiment is the tone. The unconditioned
response is to raise your hand as instructed. The neutral stimulus are the colored squares. This
is the neutral stimulus because they were not instructed to do anything besides looking at the
colored squares. The conditioned stimulus is then the red square. This is due to the tone being
played every time a red square is being shown. The conditioned response is then the raising of
the hand when the red square appears in anticipation of the tone being played at the same time.
There is significant evidence that this experiment is an example of classical conditioning due to
every step being included that indicate an example of classical conditioning. The experiment
involves the participants raising their hand every time they hear the tone. The first step is to get
the participants to raise their hand to the tone without any other stimulus or activity. The
second step is to display a sequence of different colored square on the screen. The tone is then
played every time a red square is shown in sequence of many other different colored squares.
The tone and red square are repeated approximately five times and at the end only the red
square is shown without the tone. Many cited the need to raise their hand and did without even
hearing a tone but anticipated the tone at the sight of the red square. Personally, I did not raise
my hand because I caught onto the cycle on the third time the tone was played and carefully
focused on whether a tone would be played.
