We Shall Overcome, But How?
Oppression is something that goes on daily in many people’s lives. Some notice the
injustices that take place while others do not. Politicians in America usually would not want to
use the word oppression to describe the repeated injustices that occur against minority groups.
Since in their eyes it would put certain racial and/or social groups on the same level as Jews
during the holocaust and the citizens of South Africa during apartheid. They would rather call it
discrimination than oppression even though there are ways to tell the difference between the two,
for example discrimination is more individualized and is intentional compared to oppression.
Now I believe they would not want to classify what’s going on as oppression and call it
