Motivation: It’s a drive that propels us in a specific direction.
Emotion Vs motivation: Emotion might not be associated with a goal, while motivation is
goal oriented.
Drive Reduction Theory: Certain drives like: Hunger, Thirst, and sexual frustration motivate
us to minimize negative feelings and seek pleasure.
o Most drive reduction theories propagate that were motivated to maintain a given
level of homeostasis i.e. equilibrium.
Our drives are based on our arousal.
• There’s a U shaped relation between arousal and performance. (Yerkes Dodson Law)
• For most of us, the optimal point of arousal is in the middle of the curve. If were
below that were less motivated and don’t end up performing well, and if were above
that optimal point, then we feel anxious and don’t end up doing that well.
• When were under aroused, there’s a stimulus of hunger
Incentive Theories: Were often motivated by positive goals. There are two type os
motivation:
1. Intrinsic Motivation
2. Extrinsic Motivation.
• Needs: Primary Vs Secondary Needs.
