Social Class and Education
While race and gender remain important aspects in determining one’s access to disparate
services like medical care and education in some countries, social class plays an equally
significant role. For instance, children from the lower social class, who as well have a low
socioeconomic status, may be exposed to poor cognitive development, language, and memory,
all of which have an impact on their educational attainment. Compared to their counterparts from
the lower social class (low socioeconomic status) children from affluent families (high
socioeconomic status) enjoy better chances of educational achievement since their parents can
afford to cater to their school fees, provide the requisite educational materials, and avail a
conducive early learning environment. This paper seeks to examine the sociological question,
“does one’s social class background affect their education?”
