Since it was first proposed 7 years ago, The Keystone XL crude oil
pipeline has become a hotly debated economic and environmental topic.
The proposed pipeline would carry more than 800,000 barrels of crude
oil a day from the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, across the U.S. border
south to Gulf Coast refineries. Supporters of the pipeline believe the
project would boost jobs and contribute to better energy security.
Opponents of the project however argue that the pipeline would greatly
increase our emission of greenhouse gases, as well as the potential risk
for a pipe burst which would result in the contamination of the many
rivers that run near the pipes planned route. Rivers that irrigate the
countless farms in that territory, key to our economy. These rivers
eventually run into the Mississippi River, and a spill from this pipeline
would most certainly damage the economic livelihood of all the cities
that rely on the country’s most important river. Ultimately all of these
