Stanley Black & Decker, Incorporated
Stanley is an American based tool manufacturer and producer of home goods based in New Britain
Connecticut. From humble beginnings, a merger of a fastener business with a Rule and Level Company
cousins Frederick Trent Stanley and Henry Stanley founded what would become the worlds largest tool
and tool storage company by revenue and range of products offered.
In the year ending 2016 Stanley Black & Decker boasted a revenue of $11,406,900,000 and had a free
cash flow of $1,138,000.
Currently Stanley’s portfolio includes a myriad of hand tools such as Stanley Fat Max, DeWalt, Porter
Cable, and Craftsman. Also produced are hydraulic and industrial tools marketed under MAC and Proto
brands. Their market also includes hardware and home improvement lines which feature hinges, door
handles, and cabinet door pulls. Additionally, Stanley has become the world’s second largest developer
of automatic doors and cooperate electrical security services. Stanley’s brands can be found in many
brink and mortar retail stores like Sears or any hardware store like Ace or Home Depot. Stanley also has
its own store location in Towson Maryland near Black and Decker’s headquarters.
Some of Stanley Black & Decker’s main competition comes from other tool and tool storage
manufacturers. Their closest competitor is Bosch, but there are numerous others looking for their
market share including TTI, Hilti, and Snap-on.
Snap-on Incorporated
Snap-on designs and manufactures high end tools and equipment for transportation sectors such as
automotive, marine, and aviation to name a few. Founded in Milwaukee Wisconsin by Joseph Johnson
and William Seidemann the company gained recognition by developing a ten-piece socket set that
would snap on to five interchangeable socket wrenches, which revolutionized how tradesmen worked in
the 1920s.
In the year ending 2016 Snap-on earned a revenue of $3,430,000,000 and a net income of
$546,000,000. It is also important to note that Snap-on is one third the size of Stanley.
