The author of this article obtained this data from ArcView Marker Research and New
Frontier Data. “Americans spent 5.4 billion dollars on legal medical and recreational
marijuana last year…The total comes from over $1 billion in medical marijuana sales from
California, nearly $1 billion in sales in Colorado, and more than a half-billion dollars from
sales in Washington.”
However, I do not think this statistic is very accurate. I do not think this statistic very
accurate because over $1 billion is a vague term, they should be more specific. Also,
nearly $1 billion isn’t a precise estimate, nor is more than half-billion. The writer of this
article should have given a better estimate because over $1 billion plus nearly $1 billion
plus a half-billion dollars sums up to $2.5 – $3 billion while the graph shown in the article
displays a total of 5.4 billion dollars in sales. These numbers do not add up and it is
unclear to the reader the source of this alternate 2.5 billion dollars in sales.
Furthermore, ArcView Marker Research and New Frontier Data could have improved the
details of the research methods. ArcView Marker Research and New Frontier Data did not
provide details about the experimental methods used to obtain the data nor was the margin
of error discussed in the article.
