Reading Log #5, “What a Time to be Alive on Student Protest” by Jeff Chang, 2016, pp. 33-50
A social movement described in Jeff Chang’s We Gon’ Be Alright that not only intrigues
me but personally affects me is the “racial violence and exclusivity” students at universities are
currently facing. Jonathan Butler a student at the University of Missouri began a hunger strike in
November of 2015 to force president Tim Wolfe to resign due to his inattention towards the
racially colored student body. Butler mentioned feeling unsafe since the moment he stepped onto
the campus, but now he has been on campus long enough to know that things aren’t going to
change unless something dramatic happens. He loves his school enough to critique and fight
against all the injustices they faced at this school. After that during the 2015-2016 school year
nearly one hundred universities and colleges would receive lists of demands from students due to
the racial inequality. Student activists believe that uniting as one will help them have more power
and not be ignored anymore as they always have been. It happened and currently is happening
across the country where no matter what kind of college or university, student demands have
been really consistent in asking for more faculty and staff of color, stronger recruitment of staff
and student of color, funding for multicultural centers, counseling and mental health
professionals, amongst many other essential things. According to Sylvia Hurtado a professor at
the University of Michigan back in 1988 and 1989 there were more than one hundred college
campuses reported incidents of racial ethnic harassment and violence. This comes to show all the
unresolved racial issues that have been going on for many years in college environments and
society at large. Luckily student protests became so widespread that they forced the
administration of some schools to react. Proving that we do have a voice and are being listened
to, it’s just a matter of continuing to fight for what we believe in as students and people who
deserve to be listened to and treated with respect.
