Events leading to the crash
The aviation disaster of Eastern Airlines 401 took place over the Florida Everglades
on December 29, 1972. The airplane was a Lockheed Model L-1011, one of the most
sophisticated aircraft designed in its time, with all the most advanced avionics available. The
Eastern flight 401 from New York to Miami was more or less uneventful till the aircraft was
ready for the approach when a series of events started its track to disaster. When the landing
gear was selected down, a one-inch square light on the lower right side of the centre
instrument panel that indicates that the nose gear is down and locked in position for landing.
The light should have been on at this point considering the landing gear was selected down,
but was unlit [ CITATION Eld77 \l 18441 ]. The aircraft then conducted a go-around in which
the tower instructed them to climb to two thousand feet and climb straight ahead. After
