22) What is the “Emerging Identity” discussed in the chapter?
As I was reading this chapter it was the turn of the century and focused on government
procedures from 1800-1828. The Emerging Identity talked about in this chapter I believe is
focusing on the structure first built with Washington, and continuing with Jefferson. In the
beginning of the chapter we see conflict between America and France. We see the start of
the Quasi War that participated for two years 1798-1800. Another event before the turn of
the century was the creation of, “The Aliens and Sedition” act that focused on their own
safety. (Pg 63.) These two events were described to be the most important. Including in
what may be described as “The Emerging Identity” was the change of the nation capital
from Philadelphia to Washington. (Pg 64.) Furthermore, we see a struggle of national
policy between Executive, and Legislative branches. (Pg 67.) Jefferson purchases
Louisiana from the French for 15 million. Later on Lewis and Clark expedition stimulated
western settlement. (Pg. 69). America was introduced to Henry Clay who is documented as
one of the most memorable congressman ever. (Pg. 71.) Later on, we see Madison push for
new direction in safeguarding the economic interests of the nation. (Pg. 78.) Through this
