Theoretical Models for Explaining the Etiology of Addiction:
A Multicausal Approach in Understanding and Approaching Addictions Counseling
Theoretical models are structured after research and schools of thought that base clients’
behaviors and processes on a set of specific parameters that can help identify the causation of a
behavior or illness. These have been understood in many ways, such as that of sinfulness,
diseases, bad habits and other social, cultural, and scientific thoughts (Capuzzi and Stauffer,
2016, p. 6). The theoretical models as they apply to mental health counseling and the
understanding of addiction processes have been addressed using various medical, social, and
behavioral conceptualizations to help explain the etiology of addiction. The following two
stories are framed in how several of these models may best apply to explain addictive behaviors
and outcomes.
