Drug addiction might be a kind of disease or a mental disorder and it is a misfortune in our
society. It also has many harmful effects on health. Repeated consumption of toxic substance
in known as drug addiction. There are many types of drug addictions such as alcohol,
cocaine, narcotic, heroin, etc. and among all the drugs, alcohol might be the oldest and a
highly demanded drug all over the globe. Excessive consumption of alcohol may lead to
many diseases e.g. chemical imbalance, anxiety, depression, anger, psychosis and so on.
When consuming alcohol create problems to public health it results in alcoholism. It has
physical effects on a person either short term or long term. Thus, there are many ways of
treating alcoholism. This essay will describe some of the methods of treating alcoholism
within medical establishments and it will also argue the most effective method is motivational
enhancement theory for alcoholism. It will also show the group therapy also known as
Alcoholic Anonymous help to improve the success rates of alcohol rehabilitation.
There are different methods of treating alcoholism within medical establishments. The
method which is helpful for treating alcoholism is detoxification. Detoxification seems to be
a generally utilized option for alcoholism treatment and it might be suitable in conveying
recovery from dependence. Gerstein and Lewin (1990) emphasize that detoxification is an
effective and frequently used method within medical establishment and it start with a crisis
affirmation for an overdose. Due to the restricted and short-term periods of detoxification
projects and the high relapse, the community presumed that detoxification ought not be a
strategy for treatment; however, it is an effective method to treatment. Much medication
detoxification no less than 100,000 confirmations a year now happens in medical
establishments. According to Abbott (1996), the detoxification method could be divided into
two stages, first, early (minor) withdrawal and second, later (major) withdrawal. Mild
agitation, restlessness and insomnia are the symptoms of minor withdrawals, whereas,
confusion, over excitement and disordered sensory perception are the symptoms of major
withdrawals. On the other hand, Miller (1995) claims that there are three methods of
withdrawal – mild, moderate and severe. In the process of mild withdrawal, a patient is
treated with Librium. A 20 mg – 50 mg dose of Librium is given to a patient in every 4 hours.
