The Dred Scott decision served as an eye-opener to northerners who believed that slavery
was tolerable as long as it stayed in the south. It was a disgraceful verdict, but it revealed the
real horrors of slavery. Overall our nation is better for this ruling. This unfair judgment helped
push the nation towards a civil war by showing the cruelty and injustice inside our government.
This unfair and appalling decision started with one young slave named Dred Scott. Scott
was a slave born in Southampton County, Virginia (“Dred Scott”, Encyclopedia of World
