Drafting an Ethical Code
Ethics are moral principles that govern a persons or groups behavior. My parents raised me
to believe lying, stealing, and harming others is wrong. As I have grown up, I have realized
that ethics are different to everybody. One of the biggest ethical dilemmas is to determine
when, if ever, it is acceptable to lie, steal, or harm others. After reviewing the document
provided, I have determined when I think it is acceptable to lie to, steal from, or harm
others.
Lying can be highly destructive to yourself and to the people surrounding you. Lying is
wrong and should be avoided at all costs besides these six scenarios. Telling lies to save
somebody’s feelings, unless it is something they need to know, telling lies to avoid
embarrassment, unless the lie will be destructive to somebody or a place of work, telling
“white” lies, telling lies to your children, if it is for your child’s safety or best interest,
telling lies to protect your property, and telling lies to prevent harm to self or others.
Steeling is something that I cannot tolerate. During high school my home and vehicle
where broken into, there for I have a personal hate towards stealing and not just the ethical
dilemma. Despite my personal hate towards stealing, I am able to justify these cases of
steeling on the document provided. Copying copyrighted print matter, but only if I
originally paid for what I am copying and for self-use, copying/downloading software,
