Against All Odds
At the age of seven, Frederick Douglass set out on a journey to learn how to read and
write. Since Douglass was born a slave, he was not given the opportunity to learn how to read
and write. Along the way, Douglass ran into different obstacles. He also met a lot of young boys
who helped him along his journey and encountered different things that would help in his
journey of learning to read and write. Douglass shows how he learned how to read and write
without a proper teacher, and he succeeded by using bravery and determination.
