Double Consciousness
In the Souls of Black Folk in 1903, W. E. B. Du Bois coined the term “double
consciousness” into the study of African American psychology. Double consciousness was
established through the mechanism of African Americans viewing themselves as an individual
and as a group, peering through the eyes of the society they live in. This faction of life for
African-Americans is illustrated as “One ever feels his two-ness- an American, a Negro; Two
souls, two thoughts, two reconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose
