“Don’t Blow That Whistle, We Will Fire You!”
Overview:
The Whistleblower Protection Act is a very extensive law that protects employees in
many different agencies from retaliation for disclosing wrongdoing in the workplace. According
to the Office of Inspector General, “It is unlawful for agencies to take or threaten to take a
personnel action against an employee because he or she disclosed wrongdoing. Personnel actions
can include poor performance review, demotion, suspension, or termination. In addition, the law
prohibits retaliation for filing an appeal, complaint, or grievance” (Whistleblower Resources). In
other words, it is unlawful for an employer or agency to retaliate against an employee for
disclosing information about illegal or dishonest activities. The Whistleblower Protection Act
protects employees in many different fields including federal agencies and private industry
employees.
