Domestic Violence and Homelessness
Domestic violence is an immediate and leading cause of homelessness for women and
their children. When women flee domestic abuse, they are often forced to leave their homes, with
nowhere else to turn. Not only that but survivors of domestic violence are also often isolated
from support networks and financial resources by their abusers, which puts them at a great risk
of becoming homeless. It is because of this that I decided to volunteer with St Francis House of
Gainesville, a community shelter for the homeless. St Francis provides emergency, transitional,
and permanent housing to citizens in need of it. Not only that, by they also provide food,
clothing, and small everyday necessities such as shampoo or body wash.
