Does Love Follow a Pattern?
Since a long time ago, marriage has become one of the most important things in women’s
life. Many young women spend their lives looking for the “perfect” guy they would like to
marry. The Rules By Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schreider, is a book that is intended to provide
women with a sort of formula or instruction on how to get “Mr. Right”, as they refer to in
the book. However, these rules are flawed by the fact that love is not a calculated
phenomenon, and they are not applicable for every specific couple. The authors of this
book try to establish a standard of how love works and persuade their audience into
trusting they are experts in this topic. They choose the appropriate language and make
illogical assumptions to make women feel identified and believe that the rules are the only
effective way to find love.
The language used is biased and manipulative as they try to persuade women into
believing these rules work. In the book, the authors say, “She’s nice, she’s pretty, she’s
smart… why isn’t she married?” Using this question, the authors try to create a personal
relationship with the readers, which will probably enhance their credibility in the book.
They choose the appropriate words to make the readers relate to the issues presented, so
that it will be easier for the reader to believe what the authors will say. Through the book
the authors present themselves as experts in the topic, as they try to prove their point even
